Lancaster Country Day School:

Library Addition

Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Patio Entrance

The library addition is the missing link between the upper and lower school academic wings, and provides a second point of access.

This phase of the project provided a 2 story addition to the existing campus.  An interior courtyard was created for the students by enclosing the south end of an existing outdoor space.

"Ken has a genuine understanding of the need to design attractive, functional space at a reasonable cost."

Richard D. Johnson

Headmaster, LCDS

This addition provided a new library/media center, computer lab, classroom space, and staff offices.  This project emphasized the use of daylighting and use of natural materials to create a pleasant student environment.

Library Interior

A one and one-half story height was selected to maintain the residential scale. Sloping roofs and pronounced chimneys echo the residential neighborhood. A visual connection through the library windows into the courtyard offers a year-round natural setting.

Architectural richness and the sense of identity are enhanced by the selection of a preengineering glue-laminated roof structure.

Library Interior

Clerestory glazing complements the direct and indirect metal halide fixtures; numerous operable, double-glazed windows and exhaust fans provide natural ventilation.
