DCLS: Madeline L. Olewine Memorial Library
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Main entrance

This new branch library is the second using the prototype design developed for the Dauphin County Library System.  The site is located in uptown Harrisburg in the Susquehanna River’s flood plain, so the building was placed on piers to raise it above flood water levels.  The clerestory lit interior spaces are warm and inviting and library card holders doubled in the first eight months.

"We have always been very pleased with your willingness to listen to us first through the process. "

DCLS: Walnut Street Branch Library

and Central Administrative Offices
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Building Elevation

The Walnut Street Branch of the Dauphin County Library System was originally built in 1914.  To this day, this historic Georgian Style stone building maintains its presence in downtown Harrisburg along the Susquehanna Riverfront with its classical cornice line and pediments and large Palladian windows.

Circulation space with restored ceiling

Phased work on this project has included removal and reinstallation of the historic clay tile roof, replacement of the building’s HVAC system, asbestos abatement, painting the existing plaster, repointing the existing stone, and restoring a portion of the original vaulted ceiling.

DCLS: Northern Dauphin Branch Library
Lykens, Pennsylvania

This new, contemporary one-story branch library is constructed on a previously vacant parcel of land located in the Borough of Lykens, Pennsylvania and serves the northern region of Dauphin County.

The completed library contains approximately 6,400 gross square feet and includes a children’s section, reading and technology areas, and community space. This branch library is part of the Dauphin County Library System which operates nine facilities in the Dauphin County area and will be prototype for other library branches in the county.

Lancaster Country Day School:

Library Addition

Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Patio Entrance

The library addition is the missing link between the upper and lower school academic wings, and provides a second point of access.

This phase of the project provided a 2 story addition to the existing campus.  An interior courtyard was created for the students by enclosing the south end of an existing outdoor space.

"Ken has a genuine understanding of the need to design attractive, functional space at a reasonable cost."

Richard D. Johnson

Headmaster, LCDS

This addition provided a new library/media center, computer lab, classroom space, and staff offices.  This project emphasized the use of daylighting and use of natural materials to create a pleasant student environment.

Library Interior

A one and one-half story height was selected to maintain the residential scale. Sloping roofs and pronounced chimneys echo the residential neighborhood. A visual connection through the library windows into the courtyard offers a year-round natural setting.

Architectural richness and the sense of identity are enhanced by the selection of a preengineering glue-laminated roof structure.

Library Interior

Clerestory glazing complements the direct and indirect metal halide fixtures; numerous operable, double-glazed windows and exhaust fans provide natural ventilation.
