Columbia Market House
This historic building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is breathing new life. The plan to restore the formerly closed market takes it back to its original use as a fresh foods market and introduces an anchor tenant with a new restaurant.
Using the original stand details, the new market features 22 market stands of varying sizes within the 8,500 SF space.
After surveying the local community, CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, who operates the market, selected vendors and operation hours based on the community input, ensuring their promise of quality produce and products.
Outside of market operation hours, the building also serves as a local community space, hosting various activities.
All new electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems, including air conditioning, allows the market to operate comfortably all year round. All new fully accessible restrooms bring the building up to code, serving both market and restaurant customers. The project also features a new commercial kitchen and dedicated seating areas to support the restaurant.
The beloved original brick floor was removed for safety and cleanliness, salvaged and selectively reinstalled in prominent areas, paying homage to the original market.
Exterior restoration includes the reconstruction of the formerly removed timber frame roof overhand on the North facade to provide a covered area for stands when the market extends outside during periodic street closures of Sadie Lane.
