Montgomery Mansion
Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County Award Winner
To those passing by, the Lancaster County Convention Center seems to be a completely modern building, boasting the perfect space and ambiance for gatherings of all sorts and all sizes. Inside, visitors’ curiosity is piqued as they come upon the Montgomery Mansion, integrated into the building as a primary design feature in the hotel lobby. We believe this is the only convention center in the country with a historic building designed as a functional component of the property.
Built in 1804 as a home for prominent local attorney William Montgomery, this project restores the home’s original Queen Street façade and the rear curved walls that were demolished in the early 20th century.
This building’s functions are complimentary to those provided in the adjacent Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott Hotel and events are catered from a commercial kitchen located in the lower level of the Mansion. Each space is appointed with mahogany millwork, wall coverings, wood floors, stone and tile.
The only remaining historic features within the National Register listed Montgomery Mansion were portions of the original staircase and its groin vaulted plaster ceilings. The renovations were designed to make the restoration and reconstruction of this staircase a focal point of the interior and other spaces were organized around this feature.
The fourth floor transforms the former attic into a bridal suite with abundant natural lighting, views of historic downtown, accents of polished marble and exquisite finishes. The suite opens onto the main ballroom level in the convention center, providing a unique opportunity to couple the modern wedding and banquet facilities with a beautiful historic interior.
