Watt & Shand Facade
The Lancaster County Convention Center and Marriott Hotel is a monumental project that has revitalized Lancaster City’s prominent Penn Square. This 412,000 square foot convention center and 299 room hotel integrates new and historic construction by adding a 13 story tower for the Marriott Hotel and preserving the historic facade of the former Watt & Shand Department Store.
Several historic homes of prominent Lancastrians were woven into the design of the complex to create a heritage museum. Hammel Associates’ role in this project is as a historical consultant to analyze and advise the best and most historically appropriate methods for integrating the old and the new. Additionally, we prepared contract documents for rehabilitation of the historic Watt & Shand façade, and played a key role in construction administration.
Exterior improvements such as a new roof, windows, and entrances will restore the Cultural Center, along with a new elevator for full ADA access. Additional renovations include new HVAC throughout the building, updated lighting, and upgrading finishes throughout.
