West Chester Borough
he 27,500 square foot renovation of the existing municipal building and police station allowed the mayor, administration, building codes, zoning, finance, and parking offices to remain in the heart of West Chester while correcting building code and accessibility deficiencies and redesigning the existing spaces for a more efficient layout The work included a complete renovation throughout the entire building, re-configuring spaces for better utilization and selecting new finishes and systems to give the environment a new life. When the return on investment of window replacement proved to not be financially prudent, we retained the existing 1990 era teal aluminum window frames, creating the basis for a new color palette.
The West Chester Sustainability Advisory Committee awarded the completed renovation the Gold West Chester Sustainable! Certification which recognized the sustainable design features incorporated into the project such as water saving plumbing fixtures, LED lighting, improvements to the thermal building envelope, exterior rain gardens and electric vehicle charging stations.
“The Sustainability Advisory Committee would like to recognize that the overall renovation design and construction provides excellent sustainable initiatives and deserves the recognition to be bestowed by the Borough of West Chester for sustainable development.”
The West Chester Police department, utilizing 13,850 square feet within the municipal building, was completely redesigned and updated to meet current accreditation requirements. A covered entry/exit was added to facilitate safe prisoner discharge and a new vehicle impound area. Additional improvements include: new evidence processing room with a fume hood and pass-through evidence lockers; expanded holding rooms to separate men, women, and juveniles; and a fully compliant prisoner processing room. Our design allows for future department expansion in the duty bag and locker room areas, up to 40 additional officers. Security was another important upgrade, adding bullet resistant construction in specific locations and new access control, security and video surveillance systems throughout the building.
