Abbeville
This project involved the exterior rehabilitation of a Georgianstlye private residence located in Lancaster Township, Pennsylvania. A portion of the house dates back to 1750, and there is some evidence that it may have a history as far back as 1717. The historical significance is well-documented, and it is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.
An open temple structure was selected for the porte cochere. A low-sloping roof supported by a colonnade connects the porte cochere to the kitchen entrance door. Georgian reference details are used throughout. A pedimented gable with a clam-shell vault and carved wood sunburst medallion at the spring point was selected as the central architectural element for the new front porch to emphasize the front entrance. Both the low-sloping roof and Indiana limestone stairs are heated for ease of winter maintenance.
The 2-story addition to this historic Lancaster residence provided additional living space on both floors and new basement. The new family room features a wood burning fireplace, custom millwork bookcases and a wood coffered ceiling. A grand statement in the main foyer is the custom curved staircase flowing from the first floor to the second floor master suite. The dramatic feature showcases custom millwork and a curving wrought iron railing. Also on the first floor is a new half-bathroom and art and photo gallery. The second story makes way for a new master suite featuring an oversized walk-in closet and dressing room, a spacious master bathroom with dual vanities and a large walk-in shower and outdoor balcony. The basement area provided additional space for a home gym.
A new pool house and woodland outdoor living area and a beautifully detailed redesign of a formal garden entrance transform this historic estate to fit a modern family’s lifestyle.
The massive stone fireplace provides warmth in cooler seasons and surrounding trees provide cooling shade in the summer, making this a multi-season retreat. The trellises, limestone, and pavers echo elements of the estate and subtle lighting makes the area accessible at night.
A formal garden lies beyond this beautiful entrance. The stucco garden wall and posts with limestone trim match the home’s exterior. Finials have a pineapple motif, the symbol for hospitality. An ornate metal entry gate reflects the grandeur of the home without obstructing the view of the landscape and the distant set of matching posts.
