Bethel AME Church
Organized in 1817 and dedicated in 1821, Bethel A.M.E. Church is the oldest institution serving the African American population in Lancaster County. Hammel Associates has been working with Bethel AME on a master planning and feasibility study for their campus, with the project includes a renovation and expansion of the historic church and cultural center.
The cultural center, originally designed by noted Lancaster architect C. Emlen Urban in 1895, is home to Bethel AME’s administrative offices, the Hopkins Study Center, the Cunningham-Jackson Community Senior Center, the Jean Polite Food Bank and “Living the Experience,” a creative, spiritual and interactive historical reenactment of the Underground Railroad.
Our proposed design includes various site work like new retaining walls and landscaping and providing updated accessibility. The church will be renovated to add HVAC and replace all exterior doors and windows in the Annex. Other improvements include an interior reconfiguration and upgrading finishes like the Narthex ceiling and carpet throughout. Also proposed is an addition to the Church, providing a much-needed grand multi-purpose room to better serve the congregation and community.
Exterior improvements such as a new roof, windows, and entrances will restore the Cultural Center, along with a new elevator for full ADA access. Additional renovations include new HVAC throughout the building, updated lighting, and upgrading finishes throughout.
